Orbiq #009 — Credit

Credit health

Hi there — your credit score quietly sets the price of your next car, apartment, and mortgage. A few facts move it more than most people realize.

30%

Keep what you owe under about 30% of your limit — and it's the statement-date balance that lenders see.

01 · Utilization

Keep it under 30%

The fact: credit utilization — the share of your limit you're using — is one of the biggest score factors, and the common guidance is to stay under 30% (lower is better). A $9,000 balance on a $10,000 limit reads as risk, even if you pay in full. Orbiq shows utilization per card and overall, so you can watch the ratio, not just the balance.

02 · Statement-date timing

The date that gets reported

The fact: card issuers usually report your balance on the statement date, not the due date. So a card paid in full can still report a high balance if you spent heavily before the statement closed. Knowing your billing cycle lets you time a payment before it's reported — Orbiq's per-card view makes that cycle easy to see.

03 · Payment history

One missed payment costs the most

The fact: payment history is the single largest ingredient in most scoring models, and one late payment can linger for years. The fix is boring and effective: never miss a due date. Orbiq's Upcoming Payments flags what's due before it's late, so the highest-impact factor stays in your control.

04 · Length of history

Your oldest card is an asset

The fact: the average age of your accounts helps your score, so closing your oldest card can quietly hurt it — both by shortening history and by shrinking your total limit (which raises utilization). Before you close anything, check what it does to the ratio. Orbiq lets you see the whole picture across cards first.
