Mint alternative

A Mint alternative for Canada

Intuit closed Mint at the start of 2024 and pointed its users to Credit Karma. If you are in Canada and want a budget again, especially with money in a second currency, this is what Orbiq does.

The Orbiq ledger with the Currency Lens on original amounts: a ₹15,000 family transfer from an Indian NRE account, a €176.80 hotel booking and Canadian grocery rows
One ledger on sample data: rupees, euros and Canadian dollars together, each at its own day’s rate.

Built in Canada, priced in Canadian dollars

  • Priced in CAD, from CAD $9/mo, free for the first 18 days, no card.
  • Your data in Canada. The primary database is in Canada, encrypted at rest. How Orbiq handles your data.
  • Canadian bank sync on Orbiq Connect, through Plaid; or import a statement from any bank with no login. Banks verified for import.
  • A second currency is normal here. US dollars from a cross-border job, rupees sent to family, euros for a flat abroad: each amount stays in its own currency, at the rate from its own day.

One honest difference

Mint was free because ads and offers paid for it. Orbiq is a subscription with no ads, and nothing in it is selling you a card or a loan. That is the trade.

What Orbiq does differently

  • One ledger for every currency you live in. CAD, USD, INR, GBP, EUR, AUD and nine more sit together; each row keeps the amount and currency the bank wrote.
  • The rate from each transaction’s own day. Totals in your home currency are converted row by row, not at one rate for the month.
  • What a transfer really cost. Orbiq pairs the two legs of a transfer between your countries and prices it against the mid-market rate on the day it left.
  • Import from anywhere. Screenshots, PDF statements, CSV, XLSX and OFX, from any bank in any country, with no bank login. Canadian and US banks can also sync on Orbiq Connect, through Plaid.
  • Leave whenever you like. Export everything as documented JSON, or as CSV files YNAB and Actual Budget import, and read an export offline with the open-source viewer.
