What this number is, and what it is not

Mid-market (interbank) reference rate. This is the rate banks and transfer services quote against — it is not a rate you can transact at, and every provider adds a margin to it.

What did your last transfer cost?

Enter what left your account and what arrived. You get the rate you actually got, the mid-market rate that day, and what the gap cost you — fee and margin together.

Work it out

Why the rate you get is never this one

Every provider builds its fee into the exchange rate as well as (or instead of) a visible charge. A transfer advertised as "zero fees" is usually one where the whole margin sits in the rate, which is why comparing advertised fees tells you almost nothing.

The only comparison that means anything: take what actually landed in the destination account, divide by what left yours, and compare that to the mid-market rate on the day you sent it — the number above, historically. Everything else is marketing.

For one transfer, the transfer cost calculator does that arithmetic in ten seconds. For all of them, the Receipt reads a bank export, finds your transfers automatically and prices each one against the mid-market rate for its day.

Between the two dollars

Snowbirds, cross-border commuters, and anyone paid in one dollar and spending the other convert more often than they notice. Because both amounts say “dollars”, a bank's margin on the conversion is easy to miss: it sits in the rate, not on a fee line.

Orbiq keeps a US account in USD next to your Canadian ones and pairs the two legs of a transfer, so a conversion shows up as a transfer with a cost, not a mystery expense. Canadian and US banks can sync automatically on Orbiq Connect, through Plaid. Statements from elsewhere import by file.

Track every transfer automatically. Orbiq keeps both your countries in one ledger and prices every transfer against the mid-market rate on its own day.
